Work Permit

Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada. If you’re not sure, you can find out if you need a work permit.

Get the right work permit for your situation

There are 2 types of work permits.

Employer-specific work permit

An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit, such as:

  • the name of the specific employer you can work for
  • how long you can work
  • the location where you can work (if applicable)

Before you submit your application for an employer-specific work permit, the employer who wants to hire you must complete certain steps and give you either a copy of a Labour Market Impact Assessment or an offer of employment number to include in your application.

Open work permit

An open work permit lets you work for any employer in Canada, except for one that:

You can only get an open work permit in specific situations.

Caregivers

Canada is now accepting applications to its two new caregiver immigration pilots.

The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot replace the Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots and provide eligible caregivers with a pathway to permanent residence once they’ve acquired two years of Canadian work experience.

This new program provide work permits to caregivers who have a job offer in Canada and who meet the following criteria:

  • Language tests results showing a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 5 in English or French;
  • One year of Canadian post-secondary education or the foreign equivalent; and
  • Admissible to Canada.

Caregivers already working in Canada on a work permit who meet these criteria can also apply for permanent residence through the new pilots.

The Government of Canada has set out a multi-year immigration levels plan that commits to welcoming more permanent residents to Canada over the next three years. In 2018, the Department expects to welcome between 290,000 and 330,000 new permanent residents (with a target of 310,000), which is the highest level in recent history. Moreover, this plan includes raising immigration levels to between 300,000 and 350,000 in 2019 (targeting 330,000), and between 310,000 and 360,000 in 2020 (targeting 340,000). Most of these will be filled out by international students who, after their study filed for PR.

It is very expensive for Employers to get job offer approved from Service Canada as advertisement cost around $800 and Service Canada fees is $1000 per person. Most of the time, they reject it and advise employers to apply again with some amendments and pay fees again. So essentially, it is very expensive to hire a foreign national. I was in touch with many Employment Agencies, some of them promised to help me and some of them flatly said no. To know more about job offers, please email your brief resume at panesar@gmail.com

Medical exams

You must have a medical exam before you come to Canada. Your family members must also have one, even if they are not coming with you.

We will not accept your application if your health:

  • is a danger to Canada’s public health or safety
  • would cause too much demand on health or social services in Canada

Police Clearance certificates

If you have a criminal record, you may not be allowed to enter Canada. You cannot enter Canada if you pose a risk to Canada’s security.

You may need a police certificate from any country or territory (except Canada) that you have spent six months or more since the age of 18.

For example: if you visited, worked or lived in a country for two months, left for a few years, then returned for four months, that counts as spending six months there. In this case, you would need a certificate.

In some countries, it can take a long time to get police certificates. Therefore, you may want to  get them early.
